Years ago I read a series of books that, for want of a better word, I call adventure fiction. Similar to the Travis McGee books but without the money element.
What I remember of them is this: one guy; helped people with their problems; had a girlfriend who was very well off, if not rich, that lived on a ranch in Ely, Nevada; he had a "pistol range" that involved tires with cardboard in the center that he could release to roll down a chute and hop in the air in a random direction so he could never be sure where to aim until the tire actually showed up.
