Can Anyone help with a longshot!

I read a Sci-Fi book back in the Eighties, can't remember the title or the author, however the story was set around 4 secret groups of individuals that had special abilities, I can't remember all 4 groups, but two were Telekonetic's and Coercer's, and each person had varying levels of these powers.

Each of the group's were secret from each other and were trying to outdo each other in a race for something or other...

It was a really interesting read and has stayed with me since teenage years, can anyone help with the title or author as I'd love to purchase it?

Thanks...

Darren

Hi Dazr, I'm not familiar with the story you've mentioned but I thought I'd post this 'just incase'.

There is a rather large collection of short stories that are called the Wild Card series. Various authors, some unknown and some quite famous, write on various characters and settings all based on a similar theme and send in their stories to be edited and published by none other than George R.R. Martin himself. I believe there's over a dozen complete novels! These were first written in the 80's and are like comic books written in novel form. I mention these books because they are full of interesting and awe-inspiring characters like the ones you mentioned. Doubt this is what you're looking for but I felt like mentioning them.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the comeback...

You've got me thinking now that the story could have been part of a short story compendium, (but I'm still not sure??) I was reading, (at that time) Arthur C Clarke, Assimov, Piers Anthony, (don't think it was his style really!) Terry Brooks, (him neither) Howard, Jordan, & L Sprague Du Camp (The Conan Novels).

I've tried scouring the local library and reading everything and anything by the aforementioned first two author's, but so far 'nada'...
