Cavalry / Indian Horse

Hi all. In the mid-1960s my older brother had a children's book that had very realistic color illustrations of a horse which belonged to a young indian brave and was lost to the cavalry, where he found a home with a young officer, and finally I believe, was regained by the young Indian. Does this story ring a bell with anyone? Help appreciated!
