The first book of Cerebus is very different from the rest of his work. It starts out as a pure Conan-parody (Book1) but it soon grows into something very different. The first book introduces many of the characters so it might still be smart to start there, but you could also start at the second book "High Society" since its more representative for the rest of the story.
