The Road to Character (click to see Amazon hyperlink) by David Brooks is one that folks for the conserving of social values will like, will those who can't stand conservative thought, will dismiss as a protest against the prevailing wind of progress. The thesis that Brooks puts forward is that the western world has lost its moral compass and that as a collective whole, we have lost our moral vocabulary and underlying reasoning that encompasses who we are. The result, is people who are adrift, the rise of relativism, and a feeing of being unsure in the realm of politics, economics, and society at large. The book is well written and Brooks cites current and previous cases of individuals who were once adrift, but who found their moral compass through the Christian lens. Dorothy Day, Augustine, and others are profiled.

I would contend that a lens is needed, but that the correct one would be the scientific, enlightenment model and reasoning. While we have "new atheists" who are glue for reason as they see it, we don't have intellectuals who argue for 'our model' as being the best one to bring about personal and moral happiness around the globe.

Here is a good video by Brooks. Please excuse the introductory piece, which like most introductory pieces, is nauseating.
