Dirge for a Republic - a poem

Dirge for a Republic

The worst has happened:
The best no more,
The City gone,
A Pile 0f Sludge
Where once a Shining Hill.

'Exceptionalism' a word no longer needed,
'With malice toward none
And charity for all'
Quaint,
Too quaint
And now no longer 'operative.'

The noble Experiment in Freedom,
Liberalism, has run its course,
Its dying breaths enough
To elevate one black President,
Then no more left
For one white woman

For shame, for shame!
The black shrouds
Which once draped
The Emancipator's casket
Are needed again,
To wrap Liberty's Statue
And mourn the passing
of our Great Welcome.

Her Torch is shattered
Her Crown dislodged
Her Tablets now mocked abroad.

All women are disgraced and Truth upended
To willing applause from the majority –
The Circus is here! The End is near.

And we are Dead.
There is no Hope.
