Google wins book-scanning case: judge finds “fair use,” cites many benefits

I'm glad. Google books only allows a portion of a book to be viewed but its fantastic if you are researching something or even just want to preview a book. And getting access to more books particularly non-fiction can only be a good thing.

No matter its benefits, that seems like a highly transformative definition of previous concepts of "fair use."

Is it? I mean if you go and read the book in the library and quote from it in a paper, and reference it, you didn't buy it, or pay for its use in anyway ... and that has always been acceptable. All Google is doing is putting the library on the net and giving people the same kind of access - only more limited because you can't ever see the whole book at once.
