His "Coalwood" series beginning with Rocket Boys (the movie October Sky is based on it) is just excellent - all real page turners. Then his "Josh Thurlow" series of World War II adventures beginning with The Keeper's Son are great - great characters, great stories, all well told. I also like his most recent novel titled Red Helmet set in the West Virginia coalfields. It's romantic, funny, sexy, and filled with adventure. All in all, Hickam is an excellent writer who seems to be able to write in any genre. For those who like Tom Clancy, try Hickam's Back to the Moon. It's a great techno-thriller. I guess his greatest drawback is that he doesn't stick to just one genre but every one of his books I've read are page-turners and when I'm done, I want to keep reading his stuff.
