In need of a beautiful book...

living in l.a. during winter hurts me.
I am in need of an amazing book that takes place in northern canada or russia.
A book which has vivid descriptions of the snowscape and how it feels.

Do any of you know of a book like that?

Well this is by no means a beautiful book, but Death on the Ice by Cassie Brown is worth a read. It's a true story - off the coast on Newfoundland in 1914. A group of seal hunters are trapped and have to face the harsh climate.

This book might make you enjoy LA winters!

If you want to read about snow, read Russian literature. (I'm not joking). My suggestions include Anna Karenina and Pushkin's The Tales of Belkin. There's one particular tale about a snowstorm and its consequences.

Damnit, I was going to suggest that one.

What about One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn?

I was also thinking of this one! Another to think about is The Terror by Dan Simmons, which sounds quite a bit like Death on the Ice.

I realize this is an old thread but I just read, "City of Thieves" by David Benioff which may qualify. Set in and around St. Petersburg in WW2. Not quite as cold as Dr. Zhivago, but still cold.
