I have read two books by Ivan Doig. The first was The Sea Runners about four indentured servants escaping their Russian work camp in a stolen canoe. The second book and the one I most highly recommend is The Whistling Season. The Whistling Season is about a school superintendent who is asked to determine the fate of the one-room schoolhouses in his state, reminisces about days spent in his own one-room school. This is a relatively light read, but the writing is excellent and the story is well told.
