Kenneth C. Davis: A Nation Rising

Sure

The author essentially chronicals the lives of six lesser-known Americans and uses their stories to tell the history of the ~50yrs b/t the end of the Adam's presidency (the first one, John Adams) and the beginning of the Civil War. For instance, he uses the story of Aaron Burr to examine the history during Thomas Jefferson's presidency, a story which turns out to be a lot more interesting than "he was Vice President; shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel." The book has a leftist slant in that it doesn't portray early American's in quite as glorified a light as most history books do, perhaps dwelling more on the less-than-pleasant aspects such as slaughtering Native Americans and slavery, and less on the aspects that Americans would like to remember, such as rugged individualism and pioneering modern democracy.
