As he gets further away from the centre, traps worsen becoming fatal further out.
He tries to dig out but can't, robots appear over night to fill in the hole/clean up. Force field over all. A group try to get in to him,
succumbing to the further out/most fatal traps, (pits with spikes, large blades sliding out of walls, etc). Science Fiction, read it about 30 years ago.
If anyone can identify the Title and/or Author it would be much appreciated.
