I have recently been trying to re-read alot of the books I enjoyed as a teenager, and have come upon one book that has me stumped. Hopefully, if I give someone a synopsis it can jog thier memory.
The book starts out in a village (on another planet). This village is at the base of a great mountain. The village is inhabited by shape shifters. At a certain age, the boys are supposed to ascend this mountain in a "coming of age" test. Up the trek many of his companions are killed or lost. The main character reaches the top of the summit, and what he finds shatters his previous beliefs. (I believe the sun mutates these people as they climb the mountain)
Does this ring a bell with anyone? I borrowed the book from the library in the late 80's, so it is probably about 20-25 years old.
