This is a toughy...I do not know the name of the book or even the author. I just know a brief description.
The book is about an alternate universe where everything that gets used gets better. For instance, an axe left against a shed is going to get dull and rustic but if someone cuts wood with it is going to get sharper. In the book rich people own people. They have to to have people use all their stuff so it continues to get better.
