Old book title finding help???

Hi I’m trying to recall the name of an old book but I don’t remember the name of the author or book title.

Part of the story line I remember is about a young girl with strange powers telepathy was one I believe she could tell how some people where feeling, she meets a man who tries to help her develop this power. Near the end her brother has gone sailing with a friend, a storm stars and they capsize and he ends up stranded lost at sea. He knows about her sisters powers and calls to her then she and her teacher go looking for him.

Vague description I know, but does any one have any ideas? I loaned it from the library years ago and it’s been bugging me for some reason.
