Maybe here or some other book place i remember someone wandering if Anna karenina had been set in recent years, the psychiatric side of her downfall would have been put forward.
Asylium is the answer to that question and it's negation, because if passion and love can cause serious arm it can't be cured, not by medication anyway.

Stella is the wife of Max, a wealthy and ambitious Psychiatrist, they have just arrive in one of the main asylium near London and Max is on his way to become the super intendant. They settle in the house given to them in the premices and have on of the patient, Edgar, to repair the green house.
Edgar is scultor who mudered and mutilated his wife but being slowly cured by a friend of the couple, Peter, and older praticien.
And then it hit the fan, big time.

Told like this it could be Barbara Cartland or fatal attraction, but McGrath is a crafty man and knows is subjet well having spend part of is life in this sort of institution.
The base of it is sex, Stella is passionate, beautifull, elegant and her husband is only really interested in the later two of her qualities, he neglect her so she get it were she can. And sex is as good trigger for passion as anything else. On can have a forgetable one night stand or be hooked without knowing it at the time, like a first cigarette.
I liked the way it slowly built, Stella never feel the importance of her needs and how far she is involved until she start to depend on them, and being clever and strong, she manage to blind herself and others.
That is where lay the main interest, it is passion in a place where they are supposed to be specialist of humain disorders, where madness is kept in check, but it florish because Stella lived with psychatrist, know how to play them dum.
It's like a kun fu champion being knock down by his wife sauce pan. he never saw it coming.
I can't reveal too much, but their passion go further than the hospital and the life of Edgar and Stella lead together for a while is rich in good and bad. Edgar is mad, dangerous mad but her husband has the worst of deseases, he is boring and obsessed with is social status.
Like Anna Karenina, Stella is ambigous for us reader, we are balance betwin admiration and loathing, worst, we understand, see how she systematicly degrade herself, until the only thing left is her love for Edgar.
As for poor Max, there is more to him than expected at the start and it take a lot to face these situations but he was just not cut for it. A feather weight caught in a wrong category.
This is just few of the facts but i found best the atmospheres, some scenes are classic like the school outing, and the parts in the isolated country house when the all live in the hopeless pit, incredible.
