Raw Spirit, Iain Banks's one and only non fiction book wasn't Iain's idea, he came to write it because his agent, Mic Cheetham, thought he was an ideal candidate to write a whisky book for a publisher she did business with.
The final result as well as being a book about whisky also finished up encapsulating Iain, his country, his love of driving, his politics and his history so the book IMHO can also be read as a limited autobiography. I really enjoyed it but then again I'm a fan.
In whisky terms and only if you like Iain Banks, maturity increases appreciation so make sure it's the very last Iain Banks book you ever read.
