I'm trying to find the title of a novel I read in the 1980s. At the end of the book we learn that centuries ago the protagonist was held in chains while a master sword maker repeatedly tests the blade he's forming on the protagonist. Most of the book takes place in a contemporary large US city. Through a series of chase scenes and violent clashes we learn that the protagonist has spent lifetimes pursuing the man who was responsible for his imprisonment and torture. Thanks...
