Alternate history is not a sub-genre that I enjoy and Lenny's review of Conquistador only reinforces that idea. I read Dies the Fire, a post-apocalyptic story, a few weeks ago and liked it pretty well. It is the first in a three part series dealing with the aftermath of a storm that sets the Earth back to a very low state of technological viability. I suppose I am a little biased in favor of this book though because it is set in or very near parts of the Pacific Northwest in which I have lived. The book gets you thinking about where you would want to live if this kind of catastrophe occurred. It gives the strong impression that certain practical knowledge and skills would be valued and people without this basic survival ability would quickly either adapt or disappear.
