Shadows of a Flickering Candle

Born in the before
Living unto the present
How long have they lived here?
How much history have they seen?
I sit and watch
Wondering as I puzzle over
Such a fragile shell
Such strength bound within
It’s hard to believe
That this withered form
Once stood tall and proud
Hard to comprehend
They were once like me
Will I be like that?
Will I be as trapped?
Knowing within I am as I am now
Yet on the outside,
Being nothing more then a shadow?
I don’t want that future
While at the same time I crave it
Wisdom, Peace, A time of Rest
Pain and Suffering, Time’s cruel test.

Is it a blessing or a curse?
I can’t make up my mind.
Many things grow better with age,
Love, friendship, wisdom and wine
Years adding to the years,
Do the pleasures make up for the pain?
Are the trials worth the gain?
I watch those who prove
That Growth with age is best
Yet I see those who show
The struggles never end
Troubles continue on
Seemingly growing with time
The sickness, the Loss
I wish I could live forever
I don’t want to lose
The loves I have in life
Friends, children, a wife
Selfishness is what drives the desire
To live forever on this mortal plane
And though I know I will see them again
The fear still remains

As I snap out of my thoughts
I see them smile
A young couple
Their appearance fades away
They’re love still lives on
Their spirits still alive
And I can’t help but hope
That I can endure the torrent,
The chaos of the future
And strive on to live
Through better and through worse
Knowing that whatever comes
My future can be bright
For even the Flickering candle
Can turn darkness into light.
