Has anyone read Spider World by Colin Wilson? For anyone who doesn't know, he has his own philosophy/existential view of 'the outsider'. The positive side to his outlook is that he sees humanity poised at the beginning of spiritual/mental freedom. Some critics have said he lacks imaginative vision. This series [a quartet!] will confound these critics. The imaginative drive makes Harry Potter look like Enid Blyton. If I say that intelligent giant spiders have subjugated humankind it may give the wrong impression! Niall, the hero, embarks on a quest to end all quests: To regain control and start on humanity's next evolutionary step.
How's this for the beginning of a story:
"As the first cold whisper of the dawn wind blew under the flat stone that covered the burrow, Niall place his ear against the crack and listened with total concentration. . . . Now suddenly he could hear the faint sound of a large insect moving across the sand."
