It was a curious-looking toy. Derek had never seen anything quite like it. The box had been covered in just as much dust as the rest of the toys in the attic, but this toy looked in such perfect condition. It was almost as though it had never been touched, let alone played with. Derek carefully lifted it out of the box to examine it. In the bottom of the box was a small brown envelope that had been hidden by the toy.

Carefully, Derek set the toy down and lifted the envelope out of the box. There were gilded letters on the front: "M K T." Curious, he turned the envelope over, carefully opened it, and looked inside. It was a little brass key. "I wonder what this is for?" thought Derek, as his attention turned back to the strange toy.

He picked up the toy again, and slowly turned it in his hand. It was about the size of grapefruit, and quite heavy. It had a funny little red button on the side.

Derek pressed it. Nothing happened. Now, more curious than ever, he gave it a good shake. Still nothing. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a luminous glow coming from the brass key. Derek was excited, but a little cautious. Just what had he discovered in his grandmother's attic?

Suddenly, just as he was reaching for the glowing key, the toy began to shake! With a loud bang and a shudder, the sides of the toy began to open up to reveal a key hole. It seemed odd that a key hole would be in the middle of the toy, but the key suddenly made more sense.

Still leary of the glowing key, Derek carefully took it in his hand. It had a strange warmth to it, but it was not hot. With a little more examination, he tried to slide it into the key hole. It fit perfectly, and if Derek didn't know better, he would have sworn the key hole pulled the key! Almost as if they were magnetic.

Derek's heart was pounding in his chest in anticipation of -- what? He realized he had no idea! Somehow, he knew in his heart that this was a very significant moment, but would never be able to explain it if asked. With sudden determination, he turned the key.

Derek's head began to spin and he noticed everything around spinning really fast. He clung to the glowing toy and shut his eyes. Then the spinning stopped. He hit the ground with a bump and took note of his surroundings. There was a dust road, a farm, some cows... Derek turned and looked up the path. There were some soldiers... wait a minute, soldiers? Derek dived into a bush and examined them.

The soldiers seemed to be searching for something. They were slowly making their way down the road, poking their rifles into the bushes. Derek's heart was beating a mile a minute; they would discover him in about 30 seconds, and somehow he knew he did not want to be found by these men.
