This is a fabolous book by Garth Nix,its narrated mostly by a boy called 'Gold-Eye',due to his golden eyes that came about because of 'The Change',when everyone over 14 years old dissapeared and the evil overlords came,they locked all the kids up in dormotories and they take the brain out of every kid when he came 14,so they could use it in thier own metal soldiers,that they use to fight each other for thier own enjoyment,but most kids got a 'Change Talent',so when the change came,some people got powers,and some used these to escape,and they where recruited to fight the overlords by Shade
This story follows a team of shades children,Gold-Eye,Ninde,Ella,and Drum,drum can move objects with his mind,ella can create objects out of thin air(she does this rarely because it is so tireing),Ninde can read surface thoughts of anything/anyone nearby,and gold eye has visions of the future in about 2-30 seconds,so he often saves his allies just before its too late
its a great story,it ends in the overlords being sent back to where they came from,and ella and drum(who where in love) dying,gold eye also gets his first vision fo the far future,that shows him and ninde(who are in love too) having children and everything back the way it should be
