I can't remember the name of this book/writer but I believe it is a short story about people who are 'trying' to build a computer that knows everything. The first question that is asked "is there a god?".

What is the title and who is the writer of this book/story?

It sounds vaguely familiar... but no more clue then that. Any idea what year, whether it actually was SF or just sounds like it?

(And a laugh, too. That's one I bet it's impossible to search for.)

I think you're thinking of "Answer" by Fredric Brown. It's a VERY short SF story - about half a page, if memory serves. But a good one.
