Basic plot- anansi the spider god lives in Africa in modern times, hypnotizing people, drawing them to his huge underground lair laden with corpses and hypnotized slave followers, inserting tentacles into their eyesockets and feeding on their fear. An American journalist, semi-immune to Anansi's powers,on assignment in Africa, loses a couple of friends to the atrocity, then his girlfriend, tracks it down worldwide to destroy it. Title and author escape me, lost my library in a fire a few years ago, slowly collecting old favorites. This novel came out late 70's, early to mid eighties, not a great book but unusual subject matter. Familiar to anyone? I've done a zillion searches, now it's down to fans with long memories.
