Writers' Groups

Does anyone have experience of writers' groups?

Are they worthwhile and what do the workshops involve?

I don't want to end up with mounds of homework

Depends on the group. The best kind is the kind where you meet with other writers who provide constructive criticism on what you're working on now, not something extra.

Or they can be like my creative writing classes in college, where we had a a few assignments due over a semester, maybe 15-25 pages total. I also had one where, for practice, people provided a "set up" situation and you worked from that.

I also have spoken to writers whose best critique buddies moved across the country and so they do everything by email.
