I'm not sure about too many of the details. I read it when I was in 6 or 7th grade I think. So probably late 80s, early 90s.
The human race is gone. The only thing that remains are basis frozen in stasis.
These big hairy creatures come to earth and accidentally wake up one boy and one girl. As toddlers the little boy hits the little girl, and the creatures are afraid that the violent tendencies that killed the human race are coming back so they each take one kid and raise them seperately.
The only other thing I can remember about the book is that the little called called one of the creatures Mother Beast.
