June 2008 - Book Group Suggestions

I'm not interested in reading that.
abrupt and to the point! lol
someone said it's very good, so I suggested it, but why not may I ask?

Libra,
I read the "Kite Runner" by Hosseini. It is an OK read, but not too deep - it is sort of a "POP" in literature, may be. So there is not much to discuss. I'd say- this is a book that reads easily and fast, it even touches some strings in your soul, but you forget the story as soon as you close the book at its last page. Besides, the second part of this book is rather dull, so you might get annoyed and wight want to read through the last 150 pages really fats.

Anyways, not much to discuss... Besides may be the political aspect of the book - what the hell those Russians ans later on the Americans did to this poor country. But that is not the main subject of the book anyway.

ok, if it isn't good for a discussion I can understand that:) Thanks for the explanation.

I'm interested in reading and discussing a book here, though I've got my own book group's book to read (probably true for lots here!). I'm a newcomer, but it seems hard to choose a book by consensus. We found it didn't work in a real life book group, so online must be worse.

We rotate book choice alphabetically.... What if a random member (perhaps previously registering a willingness) was asked to choose the book for a given month??

I read it years ago. I have a copy and plan to start rereading it in a few days. I would hate to be all alone in the discussion

I haven't received it yet but it's all my fault!:(

That's why we have to know earlier for the following ones I think:)

I have nearly finished The First Circle, but this would be my first try at this sort of thing so am uncertain what I will bring to the discussion.

I wouldn't mind reading Hemingway again. I suggest A Farewell to Arms, set during World War I.

Another American possibility: Main Street by Sinclair Lewis.

No hell hasn't froze over, but I think I could go for A Farewell to Arms this time around. Actually, I see several good suggestions this time around. It might be better not to choose two Russian novels in a row..but I'd read it if ya'll are willing:)

Of suggestions made so far I would second Main Street by Sinclair Lewis and Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev.

I looked up main street and it reminds me a bit of Bovary, from the two I would prefer Fathers and Sons.

Lets see what else is recomended:)

The question is,as anyone read the first circle?Or is reading it?

I'm just getting started on it. I've been very distracted with finding a new dishwasher and the NHL Playoffs. I would never have guessed that the Red Wings would make it this far.

Hockey eh? Never thought the Habs would go this far either!:)
