The Man From Nowhere ~ a badass former soldier hunts down the organ thieves who kidnapped a little girl. Has one of the best knife fights ever committed to celluloid. Not as sick and twisted as the usual South Korean fare. They lose a star for the lead's emo haircut. :star3:

Had a 'cheese fest' last evening with a few friends. A movie marathon of the genre: cheese.

Ferocious Planet - It was so impossibly bad that I want to scrub any memory of it from my brain with steel wool.

Snakes on a Plane - Unadulterated cheese, but lots of fun.

Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid - The second film of the cheesy Anaconda franchise and my favourite of them all. The movie is surprisingly entertaining, even if only for the B-grade clichés.

The Cave - My choice for the evening. A choice made purely on the fact that Cole Hauser is amongst the cast. Ever since my viewing days of High Incident I've had a thing for Hauser, I think it's his voice, lol. The inclusion of Cole Hauser alone made this film thoroughly enjoyable watch for me. :D

A film noir will be my vote for next movie marathon.

I am guilty of enjoying the first Anaconda film. I didn't know there were three of the films however. This calls for investigation... maybe...

Snakes on Plane was funny. I was shocked half-way through when I realised that someone honestly said yes to making the film in pitch meeting at some point... they set out to make a 'cult' film I later read, that was so bad it would be good, with highly quotable lines and such.

Oh no, Will, you're gravely mistaken. What would the world be without FOUR Anaconda films? A little more serious and far less cheesy. ;)

By not pretending to be anything other than it was, cheesy, Snakes On A Plane came out as a winner; I hear quotes from the movie constantly throughout everyday life, lol.

Friends of Eddie Coyle ~ Robert Mitchum stars as a low level Boston hood looking at a long prison stretch so he starts informing on his buddies. Gritty locales, a downbeat story, and a great perf from Mitchum make for one helluva film. Underseen but has developed a cult following. :star5:

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time ~ Whimsical anime based on the classic Japanese book. :star4:

Grosse Pointe Blank ~ I love this film, and have done since I first saw it in my late teens. Just watched it with my wife (who hadn't seen it), and found it highly enjoyable as usual. Very, very funny, awesome soundtrack, and some of the best lines in a film. Always gets me in a kind of reflective mood too. :star5:

Dolly Dearest. A doll is possessed by a vengeful spirit (or something) and kills people. Any of this sound familiar to you? Not surprisingly, it sucked.

The Border ~ Jack Nicholson is a border agent fighting corruption along the Texmex border. :star3:

Vanishing on 7th Street ~ as a fan of Brad Anderson's previous flicks I found this one a really pedestrian and boring horror flick. :star2:

Summer movie (so far) round up

Hangover 2 ~ same movie as the first one, just a different setting with a bit more raunch. :star2:

X Men First Class ~ best one since X2. :star4:

Bridesmaids ~ funniest movie I've seen this year. Kristen Wiig kills in this, I am now a fan, having never seen that much of her on SNL. :star4:

other stuff i've rented and watched on cable:

Bobby Fischer Against the World ~ great doc on the chess genuis/mental case. :star5:

The Housemaid ~ South Korean film, based on an earlier Korean film from 1960, about a housemaid who gets knocked up by her rich employer and the nastiness that ensues when his wife finds out. Beautifully filmed but formulaic. :star3:

Ip Man 2 ~ Donnie Yen once again kicks all kinds of ass in this sequel to the hit first film. ***

Swamp Shark -:star3: It was on iTunes for 99p rental and I just couldn't resist. Total cheese fest, but entertaining.

The Rite -:star3: - Slow burning exorcism-focussed supernatural flick. Didn't really bring anything new to the table, decent performance by Anthony Hopkins helped buoy an otherwise average horror film.

Paul. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have tackled sitcoms (Spaced), zombies (Shaun Of The Dead), cop movies (Hot Fuzz) and now turn their eye to science fiction. Two English SF geeks decide to combine their trip to Comic-Con with a cross-country trip to see Area 51. Along the way, they pick up a hitch-hiker from another planet - Paul, a little grey alien with big eyes and a dirty mouth who likes to smoke pot and claims to have been a consultant on every alien movie since the 50s - and a very devout Christian American. Things are complicated enough before they get the Men In Black on their trail for kidnapping and harbouring an alien...

Like their earlier movies it's a labour of love, a wall-to-wall barrage of homages, clever nods and gags that work both as references and within this story, and fans of sci fi from the last 50 years (really, pretty much any sci fi from the last 50 years) will definitely find something to love here. It doesn't quite have the same zing as their earlier movies though (director Edgar Wright isn't on board this time, he was busy shooting Scott Pilgrim). But if you've always wanted to hear a country & western version of the Star Wars cantina theme, it's hard to give this one a miss. :star4:

Thanks for the info on Paul beer good. I am a huge fan of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz so was a little dubious re: Edgar Wright's absence, but shall check it out.
