Looking for multi-genre book...

I am getting bored with the kinds of books I've been reading. I know exactly what kind of book I want to read, but it's rather difficult to come by. In fact, the only series I've read yet that meets the criteria for this kind of book was the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series, and it went really sour after Obsidian Butterfly.

What I'm looking for is a romance. But not a Harlequin romance; I want something different. I want a more complex romance, with the plot woven around a fantasy, science fiction, or horror setting. I suppose a detailed thriller might be alright, but only as a last resort.

I have a great love for dark, angsty romance. Sexual tension is also a must! I prefer lots of sexual tension to lots of sex scenes, as the tension makes it more satisfying when the other part comes about.

I'm also big on sympathetic characters, ones that I really care about, and ones that are not black-and-white. Other than what I've already said, I'm pretty open-minded to any kind of suggestion.

PLEASE help me!

I read something recently that might meet your criteria: Poison Study by Maria Snyder. I enjoyed it a lot. There is a romance in this one, but not much sex. The characters are all very well developed though, and the story is great. Here’s the synopsis:

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace--and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of ixia. And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly Dust--and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay the agonizing death from the poison. As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can't control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren't so clear...

How about these? (They are the first books in a series):

Dead until Dark by Charlaine Harris
Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison
Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson
Ill Wind by Rachel Caine

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon might be up your ally (the first book being Outlander or Cross Stitch, depending on where you live):

On one level it is a romance novel, since it focuses on the romantic relationship between the two main characters. However, it breaks certain conventions of the romance genre (for example, the heroine is slightly older than the hero). It could be described as a work of historical fiction, since it depicts a historically accurate, detailed, and well-researched account of 18th century Scottish clan life. It could also be described as science fiction, since the plot is propelled by time travel as the character Claire travels from 1940s to the 18th century at the beginning of the book.

Is that the kind of multi-genre you were looking for?

I'm familiar with all of the authors except Rachel Caine, although I haven't really read any of them. I flipped through the Charlaine Harris and didn't care for it from that and the descriptions. I'm willing to experiment with Harrison as I've heard a few things about it that sounded pretty good.

It could be. I'm willing to consider it. I wanted something a little more in the fantasy arena, but I would be willing to try it out.

Have you tried Kelley Armstrong's The Otherworld series? It sounds like you might be interested in it. :) It starts out with a werewolf narrator and switches to a witch in the third book. So far I've only gotten that far though (I was reading my brother's copies but he moved). They're all narrated by female characters and there is a romantic interest in each book and I remember there being sex scenes and tension.

That sounds interesting. I think I may have heard of it once before, but I don't know anything about it--other than what you just said, of course. ^-^ I will give it a try.

Still looking for suggestions, if anyone has anything to offer. I'm also trying to keep my thread from sinking to where no one will see/read it...

Besides, I need more suggestions if I'm going to keep myself entertained for a while...

For sure... Just like the name implies, it is about a woman who's married to a man with a rare gene disorder that causes him to travel in time, but he can only travel short distances. The beginning of the book starts with them meeting for the first time; he is 38 or so and she is 6. They end up getting married when she is 21 and he is 28, and the book chronicles their lives together, switching perspectives between the 2 of them. It is a really strange, interesting, romantic book. And they have a lot of sex, so that should make you happy... LOL!

There are loads of reviews on Amazon, if you want to have a look.

hmm...Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer? They're teen books so I don't know how much you'd like them, but I really enjoyed them and it might be what you're looking for.

I haven't yet read anything by chelsea quinn yarbro, but I've heard about her st. germain series, give that a try.
