The Crusades

I am looking for some books on the Crusades. Part of this reason is for research, because I'm always looking to expand general knowledge into something deeper, and the rest is purely for my own pleasure. All parts of the Crusades would be welcome, but especially any that details events around the time of Baldwin IV, Raymond of Tripoli, and Saladin.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Several of Judith Tarr’s books are about the crusades, but they are fantasy books, so they may not be what you are looking for. I especially like the series that starts with Devil’s Bargain.

I'm looking more for books in the non-fiction category at the moment, but I will keep your suggestion in mind when I revert to that need for historical fiction. Oh, yes. It will come!

Last semester at Rutgers I took an excellent history course: "The emergence of Medieval Europe." It basically covered the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the end of the first crusade.

One of the books we were assigned by our professor was Thomas Asbridge's "The First Crusade." Great book. It covers only the First Crusade, but it does so in depth and the writing is pretty good for a history text. It recieved great reviews from the New York Times Book Review and The New Yorker. Definitly worth you checking out and since its a text being used in Universities I imagine it is respected in the field.

I read The Crusades Through Arab Eyes a few years ago. Highly recommended.

It should be a very happy reading experience! I've been devouring history books lately, or at least books in the field of social sciences if not specifically history.
