looking for a good book (or 10) to read

HI all I'm a full time college student and I'm looking for a good book to read, does anyone have any suggestions? I like most anything but I'm not real interested in science fiction. Some of my favorites have always been just ordinary fiction and also Historical fiction. Thanks

I am really big into the Alex Hawk series by Ted Bell. Reading Phantom right now. Sort of a spy/bond/bourne type of thing. I enjoy them. Also reading through Lee Child's Reacher series, those are always fun.

GoatLady, if you have not yet read it, Asimov's Foundation series is pretty solid.

Have you read Dune?

Charles Stross's near-future books (Halting State and Rule 34) are pretty good too.

I'd love to give you a recommendation, but it'd help if I knew what kind of books you like particularly, GoatLady. What were your biggest favourites recently (or not so recently)?

to be honest I haven't really had time to read for a couple of years :( but I really like suspense, and historical fiction, but I will try to read anything once. basically I'm just looking for books that others have read and enjoyed.

Since you are now reading "Hijacking the Historical Jesus by Phil Fernandes," I would like to suggest my book, The Second Virgin Birth, by Tommy Taylor. I only am doing this because I thought you could compare and contrast the two. If I offended you by suggesting my own title, I would like to apologize, I'm truly not trying to hawk my book, I just saw what you were reading.

I have your book on Kindle and sampled a couple of pages (am reading another book at the moment) and liked what I read. Looks interesting. :)

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel could be a good start for historical fiction, it recreates the Tudor History based on religious and political skirmishes. Also, I recently read a few pages of Nefertiti by Michelle Moran online and absolutely loved it. I am looking forward to buy the book and finish it.

As for suspense, I am quite an impatient reader, and usually end up turning a few pages hurriedly to unlock the actual twist. So, my only suggestions would be the usual famous ones, like Dan Brown's Deception Point and Stephen King's Under the Dome, where I was actually not able to find out the twist in advance!

My two favorites from this year are as follows:

This Book is Full of Spiders... Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It by David Wong - a darkly humorous horror/thriller that will have you holding your breath in suspense one moment only to laugh out loud the next (if you have offended by profanity, however, do not buy this book).

11/22/63 by Stephen King - I haven't yet finished it, but I am 2/3 of the way through and have found it a most intriguing tale thus far about history, time travel and making decisions that can alter not only your world, but everyone else's as well.

P.S. This Book is Full of Spiders... is a sequel to John Dies at the End. It can be read without having read the first, however, your curiosity will make you buy the first book just based on some references to it in the second, so you may as well start with John Dies at the End.

Do you like fantasy books? YA? Which sort of sci fi aren't you interested in? Is there any type you are? I love sci fi, but there are some types of sci fi that I don't like. What's typically categorized as "hard" sci fi doesn't really appeal to me. However, something that's more about the characters or could be characterized as YA, I can easily get into. For example, The Hunger Games isn't categorized as sci fi, but there are aspects of it that could be classified as science fiction-y.

thanks everyone for your suggestions, all of the books that have been suggested I have not read, so now I have a list of books to read with out rereading anything :) thank you all very much

^^What a surprise.

Seconded. That's a really good novel.

Two of my favourite historical fiction novels, if you want to go back a bit further, are Frans Bengtsson's The Long Ships (vikings!) and Amin Maalouf's Leo Africanus (15th century). Also for a fun alternate-history romp, Guy Gavriel Kay's The Lions Of Al-Rassan.
