Forum shenanigans

sigh I saw bits n pieces of that - I guess the fuss is because she had such a squeaky clean Disney image before?

I don't exactly approve of any one cavorting like that for well reasons but at the same time she is old enough to know better and I don't have to live with the regrets - she does - so kind of whatever.

On one of the other forums I am on, one of the posters was making a big deal about his post count. It was over 10,000 IIRC. Anyhoo, the admin reset his post count to zero. Everyone thought it was funny except Mr. 10k posts.

Oh, that doesn't sound too nice. Reading a lot about reward systems (and post counts are one of the game-y ways to get people to keep on participating in an online community like internet forums, or recognition badges in internet multiplayer games) and deleting post counts sounds, uhm, a little overkill. Ah well, he probably deserved it.

I suppose it depends on much that kind of utterly meaningless validation rocks your boat or not :)

Nope. No rewards system there.

Perhaps the count (10 K ) was the reward he sought :( ? The problem with shenanigans is nobody really knows how they start, why they start and also whom they hurt. Perhaps the admin reset the count to zero not because the member was making too much of his 10 k count (which is acceptable 'cause he did spend a chunk of his time on them) but because he was a wee bit jealous :devillook.
I think it was rather unfair and more childish than the member showing off his score.

I tend to agree with you, but it depends on the forum, the members and how every one was behaving. Sometimes its ok, sometimes its not.

There is no "award" system on that forum.

The forum culture there is radically different there than here.

I'm on a forum like that.

You mean this one, don't you?

On the subject of shenanigans, the most common one I see on forums are when members (after straying from the conversation topic) post nothing but strings of silly, rude, or odd pictures... to the point where one can have entire conversations with nothing but pictures.

Again it depends on the forum - sometimes those types of posts can be very amusing and at other times rather indicative of a severe lack in several areas. It's very hard to generalise.

I understood that. What I meant was the post count was possibly a matter of personal achievement for that person (like work being its own reward:) ) and resetting the word count a matter of personal satisfaction (?) for the admin ;) 'cause we human beings exhibit such traits in all communities, be it in the virtual or in the physical world.

Perhaps such traits stir up communities and keep them from getting dull and boring!

A long, long time ago I was at a forum that wouldn't show any post counts they felt it made the forum a more comfortable environment.
