Forum shenanigans

I understood that. What I meant was the post count was possibly a matter of personal achievement for that person (like work being its own reward:) ) and resetting the word count a matter of personal satisfaction (?) for the admin ;) 'cause we human beings exhibit such traits in all communities, be it in the virtual or in the physical world.

Perhaps such traits stir up communities and keep them from getting dull and boring!

It was a form of personal achievement for him. But said person used it as justification for being better than everyone else because a high post count means you know it all. The admin felt differently.

and was prepared to abuse mod privilege to get the point across...

That may be an unfair assumption on my part but that would depend on whether or not the post count was restored.

It really depends on the forum, the usual nature of moderation on it, and how members relate to each other. I think Sparkchaser has made the point several times that things are different over there - who knows maybe they are all Neanderthal Hairy He-Men and take this kind of thing in their stride.

Taking this kind of thing in their stride would imply they don't get too upset, the guy that had his post count reset seems to have been annoyed...

Hey - wow, cool! That's my avatar, Dmitri! Amazing. But I'm not a forum, I'm a member. Book & Reader is the forum, then we're the members. I see your new too so I guess it takes getting used to.

I don't think you're the only guy that's ever used that image.

I think this conversation has covered all the possibilities. To recap:

  1. Shenanigans (ie light-hearted non-malicious games) are fun in the right context.
  2. Not all forums or members are created equal and some lend themselves to this more than others.
  3. Not every one finds it offensive but some do which would go back to point 1 - finding the right context.

Or moderators...

true enough, I've been on many a forum where there was an abuse of power or a very autocratic style of moderation. Funny thing is that those forums tend to end up with a core group of insanely loyal members for whom it "works" and they are very hard on new members AKA outsiders.

In Soviet Russia, we have propaganda, not films.
Aw dude, I'm so sorry. That must be grim. I've seen that Puttin guy and he seems no good at all - life must be tough for you, but especially if you can't watch films. Willy Wonka's really good, actually - pretty trippy. Maybe someone could smuggle in a DVD or something.

... Sorry.
No don't be - it's good to speak out about these things. I hope it's not dangerous for you to do that online. I hope you and your wife and kids if you have them are safe.

Good thoughts heading your way, dude!

:)

Yeah um maybe except that according to her profile Dmitri is 19 and from Canada :) and may be referring to the old Soviet Union because the new Russia is rather more open these days.

(I have online buddies from St Petersberg)

Aw man - did I get that wrong! And he's a chick? Whoa! Straight over my head. Didn't realise that at all.

Sorry Dmitri! Still, at least that means you can watch Willy Wonka now. They've probably got that in Canada.

Don't worry about it D-man. I had a good laugh while it lasted. :rofl...

I guess I should mention that my wife and kids are very happy and safe.
