Books vs. Computer games

An interesting question, but just at the moment, I'm relaxing and not interested in getting my brain activated. Sorry.

It's a very short survey - just some details age, gender, and two questions. Took 3 mins to complete.

Peder, what computer games do you play?
There's a provision against self-incrimination, you know. :D
But since you're an Admin, I'll be nice.: Chess, FreeCell, and too much time spent on those.
BTW, glad to see you are back.
:)

I was thinking games like CoD, WoW, EVE, etc., and didn't even consider freecell or chess. D'oh!

LOL some of us still play those golden oldies. I don't have chess but I do have mahjongg, luxor, freecell, spider, tuxcart, transcenders and ... wait for it .... Lara Croft!

Hi Sparky,
I didn't figure those were the kinds of games he meant either, which is partly why I was reluctant to answer your question, in view of my previous resistance to answering the OP in Post #2 upthread. I don't give out personal information freely, or to any stranger who just comes along and asks. Especially if their purpose is to use my information in their personal evaluation of me or my (supposed) "creative imagination," or lack thereof; or for any other unbeknownst purposes beyond my control. They can join the forum and read my posts and profile the same as anyone else, and reach whatever conclusions they wish based on what I choose to reveal voluntarily..

Well the survey is / was anonymous which I don't mind doing. Like you, however, I do mind giving out personal information on the net (and using my real name) for security and privacy reasons.

Well the survey is / was anonymous .
As much as one can trust assurances from an unknown online source.
I had the impression that site admins could view the dot addresses of people visiting their site, whether or not members.
I have done my share of responding to polls about impersonal matters, but this one crosses/crossed the line (for me).
PS: And I haven't had much luck with anonymity on the Intgernet, despite using different names on different forums.

yes but given that he is using an online survey site I doubt he can access the data. Ai lol I don't give a hoot if you do the survey or not especially as the OP was a hit and run visitor - the kind who post once wanting something from the site in some way and then vanish - so I truly don't care about who does the survey or not. I guess I just wanted to say, from one online paranoid to another :D , that in this instance I do think anonymous meant anonymous.

FYI if you want to stay anonymous online you have to change your style of posts for different forums otherwise your inimical style can be spotted regardless :)(This is over and above using a proxy and such IF you want to be THAT paranoid LOL)

oh good Lord LOL I meant if some one is also on several of the same forums you are on :)

I've recognised people from different forums by their style so it is possible.

Ah! Many thanks for the clarification, Meadow. :) Other people have also claimed that it can be done (i.e. use my 'style' to track me from forum to forum) and I have always wondered whether it can be done or not. I'm interested in all matters relating to privacy, so I asked. But I do agree that only using different names provides only minimal security. Changing my posting style wouldn't be worth the effort, and also be difficult to do. And more elaborate methods are not something I have any need for. I always feel that their use will make me seem like someone with something really to hide. :(

Well ... to be honest I have 'found' posts by a person from the information in the content. (It was accidental) And the others were from being on the same forums. A lot of people, myself included, automatically have different names on different forums for no particular reason. Others however keep the same name across all forums.

You do have something to hide LOL - your identity :D :D :D Personally I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about privacy online. The more there is a move towards forcing real name identity online the more I resist it. There are lots of legitimate reasons why a person might not want to be so easily identified online - thinking of celebrities, people in dangerous situations from abused women to people in oppressive countries, separating work identity from private life etc. And I happen to believe that given that your ordinary joe shmoe who makes nasty online comments supposedly because he is "anonymous" is a. so easily tracked these days and b. not really going to stop just because he using his real name so it is no deterrent to those types and the rest of us would like the freedom to choose how much of ourselves we reveal online for a variety of reasons, not least being identity theft, which is an increasing problem.

And we have wandered off-topic horribly *bad moderation on my part LOL mea culpa*

Thats an interesting question. I personally enjoy both at certain times, but I would say that overall I prefer books.

Hi Meadow,
I wholly agree.
Off this topic perhaps. But not inappropriate to remind people that their privacy on line is not as private as they might imagine.
Zarathustra :D

Welcome to the forum, especially in this particular discussion.

How would you say your preference for books relates to your "creative imagination," if at all, as the Original Poster seems to be trying to connect with his poll? Let me hasten to add that you needn't answer the question. (I wouldn't.) But I do offer it as food for thought.

And welcome very much..Welcome to the forum, and to this particular discussion.
Have a good day
Peder
:)
