Hi all,

I know we all love to read, that's why we're here! But meeting our reading goals isn't always easy, at least not for me. I'm curious as to how much (as in how many books, minutes per day, etc.) you all are reading each month? How much would you ideally read in a given month? If the answer to these two questions is the same, do you have any tips for meeting your reading goals? But, if you're not meeting your reading goals, what is getting in your way? I know, for me, a lack of time always seems to be the issue. Also, books can get pretty pricey!

Thanks for the insight and advice everyone!

Hello and welcome Ian,
I like to read at least an hour or two a day...work tends to get in the way of that however.
As for how much I read in a month depends on the book and writer...some books and authors are easy to pick up and start from where I left off...others not some much...

For my reading I like to , sit and read in my library , away from the TV ...its too distracting...My best reading time is early in the morning and later at night.

Andy,

Thanks for the warm welcome and the response! I definitely understand work and obligations getting in the way of reading as much as we want. I discovered an interesting fact the other day that said that reading just 15 minutes a day will lead to reading 15 books in a year, which for most people out there far surpasses their normal levels. (I did the math as well, the stat seems to be legitimate). If only everyone knew that! I'm curious, are there any other deterrents to you reading as much as you'd like besides a lack of time, such as costs of books, etc.? I know that avid readers can take a good hit to the pocket book having to buy so any books to feed their hobby.

Ian,
You are very welcome.
Deterrents...
Yeah the cost of books can be high...I shop at used book stores a lot.
Granted many of the books that I am looking for are out of print or not run of the mill...but I have seen the price of paperbacks and get "sticker shock" every time.

Also as a history buff , I get frustrated when a editor or author pushes a 20th / 21st mindset , outlook or judgement on someone or some action in the past*...that can really turn me off as a reader.
* Past as in the 19th , 18th centuries or earlier....

I do like your idea of reading at least 15 minutes a day...

How cheap are books at these used book stores, I've never been? I know what you mean about the sticker shock! Can be a little mid-boggling at times.

Well it depends on:
The book...
Author...
Condition of book...
Whether the book is still in print...
Location of the book store...
Popularity of the subject , author...
Hardback or paperback...
Edition of book ( 1st editions tend to be more expensive ) ...
Binding of the book ( leather etc.. )
Publication run of the book...
Cover art ( Movie covers are generally less expensive than pre-movie covers )

Where I live most used hardback fiction seems to sell at $12.00-$20.00
Most History hardbacks are between $15.00-$30.00
Paperback fiction runs around $5.00 or so...

Sometimes you can trade you book or sell your books at used book stores as well...which can be a good way to clear shelf space if your reading focus or taste changes.

Of course this is all true where I live and shop...where you live and shop , may be a different story... ( pun intended ... LOL )

Wow, never would have guessed that all of those factors came into play! But definitely good to get a range of prices to expect, thanks! Do you ever consider renting books? With the pace you seem to go through them, it seems like a viable option, plus it's typically free!

Naw...I've never thought about renting books...I will loan books or borrow books...either from or to friends or my local library...
How does one go about renting books?

Well I just meant renting from the local library, which it sounds like you do! Being such an avid reader, it may be worth looking into to save you some money while feeding your reading hobby, just a suggestion! I know for me, I haven't spent a nickle on a book in months!

Oh yeah the local library and I are old friends indeed...they even have book sales from time to time...
Andy

I have found some gems from time to time...always worth a look , Fun to find a book for you or one your friend has been looking for...

While not at a library ...
I did find two hard to get history books this weekend...so don't over look swap meets , garage / yard sales and antique shops as well.

Great to know! I definitely want to start looking into more garage sales in my area. What books did you find?

I found :
The Life and Adventures of James P, Beckwourth... By T.D. Bonner
It is a limited edition of 1500 re-printed in 1965 from the 1856 edition
James Beckwourth was famous Mountain Man , scout and guide.

The Fort Laramie of Alfred Jacob Miller...By Robert Warner
Miller was a artist who went west with Sir William Drummond Stewart in 1837 and made on the spot sketches and paintings of Mountain Men , Indians and general Rendezvous scenes.

Awesome! What types of books interest you the most?

Books I enjoy:
History books mostly about...
Vikings
The Romans in Britain
The Anglo-Saxons
The American West
The Fur Trade in America
Military Unit histories...especially if it was unit that I or a family member was in.
Some science fiction and fantasy
"Hard Boiled" detective stories

I have always loved to read and have been known to read the wrappers or boxes of MRE containers over and over for lack of anything else to read when starving for the printed word while deployed to some spot on Uncle Sam's business...LOL

Interesting! My father is actually a history-lover as well, I'll be sure to relay some of these books his way, I'm sure they'd peak his interest as well! I've always had the dream of starting my business, so I've been reading as many business books and books written by business leaders just to learn as much as I can!

Well I don't know much about business...other than "monkey business"...LOL
But I do think that having a plan for long term , steady profit beats a large , but short lived windfall....
