Just got 'Empire' from my library. Halfway through the audiobook now. Set in the present or very near future, more techno thriller than sci-fi, I think it's pretty good so far.

No, that's what people were reading when signed up :D I'm listening to Alchemist by Paulo Coelho as an audiobook. I'd read it a couple of years ago, the recording is really good. And Coelho is one of my favorite authors :)
I've recently enjoyed, and would recommend 'Memoirs of a geisha'.
Might be a bit off topic, but there are elements of being bought and sold in it, and definitely goes into the psychological aspect of it quite a bit.
In the same vein of East Asian women slaves, James Clavel's 'Noble House'...

I like Orson Scott Card. I think Ender series is overrated, beyond 'Ender's game', which I think is very good.
Alvin maker is a fantasy series, as opposed to sci-fi, but has the same writing style. I personally found it too be of the same or higher quality as the Ender series...
