Bugger. I forgot 'The Prodigy' by Herman Hesse, about the pressures of education and one boy's fight to deal. Very short, ideal for an intermediary read.
Funes - I just bought Abbey's 'The Monkeywrench Gang' and it's perfect, exactly what I was after. Thank you!
Novella - just bought Hemingway's 'Nick Adams Stories' - looking good so far!
About the Conrad book: has it stopped being published? Because it seems to be really hard to find. At...
That's almost as bad a question as the favourite book one. But then, everyone has a few main faves.
Eddie and Roland from SK's Dark Tower series.
Hans Giebenrath and Heilner from Hesse's The Prodigy.
Chris Boone in Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident...
Rincewind, together with Luggage -...
'The Angels Weep' by Wilbur Smith.
This book affected me a lot. If you're familiar with Smith, you'll know about his link with Rhodesia, writing about historical events but weaving fiction through them beautifully. Basically, this book is history, action, and romance that defies all cliches...
Good morning to everyone!
I'd love some help on this. I'm studying English, and for my coursework (the language of persuasion) I'm choosing the significance of nature. I have poetry and non-fiction up to my chin but I need fiction - I read a lot, however I can't remember one piece of fiction...
There's another one called 'The Forests of Avalon', but I'm not sure if that ties a trilogy together. There's also one called 'The History of Avalon' methinks - but I reckon that's a separate story.
I know there's definately another in that series, though - the Forest book.
It's a King Arthur book? This I didn't know!
Hey Jessica! I like your avatar - Captain Jack Sparrow: we need more of these. 'Lalalala, and really bad eggs.' So you reckon you'll give this book a go? I'm still undecided...
Lyra - that's what I did! And there was me thinking I was going to get it before it hit the shelves... Pah. I doubt either of us will be doing that again, ho ho ho.
I agree - IT's pretty creepy. The Stand by SK was disturbing in concept and writing; not unreadable, just very unsettling. Big read, though.
Loads of these books sound fascinating - I look forward to checking them out!
Great books. You can knock King all you want, but Roland Deschain is the literary equivalent of a Michel Angelo sculpture - beautifully real.
King's characters are his forte: the DT series shows him utilizing this skill.

Has anyone read this book? I'm close to buying it but just curious to see if I can get any first-hand feedback. If you've read it, let me know what you thought!
Take care,
