What is Your Library Like?
I see that a lot of people on here say that they get their books from the library. I am envious of those people, I must admit.
I live in an area where I think I am one of only thirty people who enjoy reading and the two libraries within driving distance of me are so...
I think that reading is one of the main keys to good writing. That may just be my opinion, but if you read enough you can usually get an idea of how you think something should look and sound.
Having a great idea is the first place to start. If you want to write, but don't really have an idea...
I wrote a lot of crap when I was young. For an assignment in the fourth grade I wrote a story about a houseplant. I can't remember anything about it except that it was written from the point of view of a plant.
I also wrote a ton of short stories in my free time about animals. I loved horses...
Ha. I used to play World of Warcraft for a while a long time ago and you made me think of that. Everyone there is a jerk and I feel sorry for anyone who starts playing that game for the first time without having an experienced friend. All the high levels just sit around all day waiting for a...
I have left books behind on accident before (I can be a bit scatter-brained). Every time when I came back someone had thrown it in a nearby trashcan. So I always got them back, except one time when the trashcan was gross and I decided to pass. :p Based on that I probably wouldn't bother trying...
That's me exactly! At one time I carefully arranged my books, but now I just try to fit them all somewhere. Two rooms of my house are filled with books. They took over five bookshelves and two closets. I do routinely clean out the books I no longer need, but I replace almost instantly.
The...
Books are too expensive to loan out in my opinion. The few times I've let friends borrow books from me they either cleverly forget to return them for eternity or they bend up, tear and otherwise destroy them. So I don't let people borrow from me anymore.
I can't stand when someone picks up one...
I have a stupid system really that only survives because I'm too lazy to change it. I dog ear my pages because I can't keep a bookmark for longer than two minutes before it's lost forever. But I don't like dog earing the pages, so I try to use the same dog ear as long as possible. Ha. I use one...
You could try reading "River God" by Wilbur Smith. It's about a slave in ancient Egypt who has a succession of masters, both cruel and kind, (including the Pharaoh) and falls in love with his mistress, has a series of adventures and ends up an old man chronicling his life story. It's a fantastic...
You could try going to Amazon.com and searching for "slavery". You might not get a lot of novels that way (if any), but you would find a lot of books on the subject...
I had to try several times over the years to actually finish Stranger in a Strangeland. It was worth it when I finally got there, but I don't think I would read it again.
The most recent book I didn't finish was Ender's Game, I think. I started it twice, but lost interest both times.
Taught Me Purple
Evelyn Tooley Hunt
My mother taught me purple,
Although she never wore it.
Wash-grey was her circle,
The tenement her orbit.
My mother taught me golden,
And held me up to see it,
Above the broken moldings,
Beyond the filthy street.
My mother reached for beauty...
