    Jhumpa Lahiri: The Namesake

I have truly become a fan of this author's work. I thought the book was quiet and understated -- but never monotonous or boring. It felt authentic - an honest look into the generation gap issue between new immigrants and the first-generation American children. The parents, newly immigrated...

    Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner

Read it about a year ago. I made a quick journal entry on BookCrossing (received the book from another BookCrosser and the entries are part of the fun.). If interested, here's the link. http://bookcrossing.com/journal/3199573

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

I LOVED ballet shoes. I read it when I was about 11. It was one of my favorites.

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson Found a few marvelous books in a charity shop. This one, Housekeeping, is a Pen/Hemingway Award winner. I just finished it - just journaled it - here's the link: http://bookcrossing.com/journal/5818475 I can't believe I have not read this writer's work...

When looks are more important that content

This is just too pretentious for words. A decorator on steroids working for a client with no sense of self. It's bad enough that people judge each other on "shelf appeal" rather than content, but encouraging someone to fill a bookshelf with fake or unread books is worse false advertising than...

What do you use as a bookmark?

I've actually accumulated quite a collection of bookmarks. My favorite, though, and the one I used most often, is made out of soft leather and says, in gold lettering, Her Ladyship!! Given to me as a gift from a friend in England.

    Help - how can I edit a post ???

Thank you. All this helps ! I'll learn my way around here sooner or later (you can probably count on later!)

    Help - how can I edit a post ???

Thank you very much. Now another question: I seem to find myself logged-out after just a few minutes. Today the system logged me out in the middle of responding to a post. (When I was ready to hit "submit" I discovered I was no longer logged-in.) If I minimize the screen and let a few...

    waving "hi" from Tucson

The Toros gave way to the Sidewinders, and now Tucson has lost them too. They were bought and will be moving. This will be their last year here. I am not much of a baseball fan, but I know several Tucsonans who live to watch spring training. The team will be missed. The weather here is...

    Toni Morrison And Doris Lessing

I have to admit, I lean towards female writers. Women deal with the blood and guts of life (so to speak) and bear their souls more in their writing. I'll be looking for more books by Toni Morrison. And, for a lighter note, but still a very satisfying writer, I just love Elizabeth Berg. She...

    Toni Morrison: Beloved

Gerbam - from what you have written, I would think you would enjoy Alice Walker's work. She writes mainly about women, mainly women of color. One of her most powerful books, Possessing the Secret of Joy, which is set in Africa, delves very deeply into the subject of female circumcision. It...

    Toni Morrison: Beloved

Reply to lionsroar13 - Where the movie differs, and what made the imagery so difficult for me, is in the fact that it gives "Beloved" a body - the body of a young girl, a drowning victim. Beloved settles into the family unit (Seth and Denver) as a zombie. I still can't get it all out of my...

    Help - how can I edit a post ???

Well, that explains that. I usually pop into the computer room in "fits and starts" during the day to answer emails and do a bit of writing and posting. I have a really bad habit of hitting "Submit" before I have edited my own writing. (I need at least two re-reads.) Multitasking is not...

    Toni Morrison And Doris Lessing

Rather than repeat a post here, if you pop over to General Book Discussions, I just posted about Toni Morrison's "Beloved". (Please overlook obvious and stupid typos - I haven't figured out how to edit a post as yet.) I really found her work disturbing but more because she creates such a vivid...
