I like watching everyone freak out about "kids these days" while forgetting that the majority of people (not just college students) have always been reading more low brow stuff than the kinds of books cited at the beginning of the article. Yeah, people on this forum probably had those...
Thanks for all of the great recommendations. I've definitely got a few more things to add to my reading list.
Yeah, I'm really just looking for a change from what I normally read, and I really feel like reading a character driven book. As far as the contemporary setting goes, I would prefer it...
I love books focused on some far-fetched plotline or wonderful setting as much as the next guy, but I need a break. I thought it would be easy to find an alternative: a character focused book with a believable story. However, I was mistaken. I spent yesterday looking through books on Amazon...
I found an interesting article regarding the difference between boys and girls in reading from the University of North Carolina. However, one part was particualrly interesting:
This struck a chord with me because I remember having one math teacher who specifically catered to the girls in the...
Here's my question, though: Do boys not read as much because there are less books for them, or are there less books for them because they don't read as much?
Meh, the topic title is pretty big generalization, so I felt I had my oppurtunity ;). Anyway, I wasn't referring to the "A" student who dislikes reading, which I do remember, but just what I remember from girls in high school in general. Even girls that did not do exceptionally well in school...

The pattern I have noticed is that young girls may read more as a percentage, but few seem to be avid readers. Whereas, based solely on personal experience, the boys that read are avid readers. More of an all or nothing type of thing for boys from my experience.
I do have one question though...
The idea of opening a bookstore seems great: a nice little quaint place where you feature books that are somewhat obscure and perhaps have some kind of added relationship with customers. However, the business side of it is quite scary. Now more than ever, you would have to offer something far...
I'm interested to see how this all plays out because it essentially flips some long held assumptions about higher education. It will also be interesting to see if this statistic eventually carries over to the professional world.
I believe I read it when I was 14. There was nothing in it that I remember being particularly hard to understand. However, I'm going to side with mehastings here: it's probably best to go along with your mom's wishes. I'm guessing that she has read the book and would know best what you are ready...
I'll definitely have to check that out. I remember another site trying to do the same thing a while back, but it had so many missing titles and such slow maintenaince that it was completely useless. Maybe this will finally be the DVD Aficionado for books.
