Publisher question

I know this question may have been asked before, and that several publisher relating questions have been asked, but I was just wondering, from a new perspective.
What type of publisher should I approach?
I would love to have a hardcover book, but I'm not too sure how I would go about asking for that, or if being a new author I would even be able to get it published hardcover (like Stephen King.)
Also I was wondering if I should even bother trying to approach a large publisher? I was trying to find out who publishes the books for prominent authors but haven't had the time to get around to the library to find out, and google just tears me to itty bitty pieces.
I was looking into Orca publications, a Canadian company, should I go with them? I don't want to self-publish, and after overlooking what I was considering a month or so ago I've changed my mind with the weird publishers on the internet since I've read a lot of scams and so on.

So, should I just go with a small publication like Orca, or should I try to find out who will be able to the best with my book in terms of marketing and distribution (if any publishers do market...)?

Thanks,

There are three big options, one of which I would never recommend. To get it out of the way, that's self-publishing.

The others are to approach small press publishers or approach agents. Nobody can recommend publishers or agents to you as that's part of your own homework as a writer. Books like Writer's Market, The Writers & Artists Yearbook, etc. list these sort of things. Ideally, you will be writing the same sort of books you read. With that in mind, find out the agents and/or publishers of your favorite books and investigate whether they suit you, whether they are taking on new writers, and more. There's a lot of great information (though take some with a pinch of salt) on Writing Forums.

If you can't get to the library, then you can use the PN enquire service. You just ask a librarian to find the information you want, and they will get back to you with what they've found. It can be a lot easier than trying to find out information on your own :)
