Joseph Heller: Catch 22

Favorite book of all time.
I've always had a strange, somewhat sick affinity with black humor and Heller is the master. I actual had to run out of a library, because i was too embarrassed that I was laughing so much and so loud...
it starts black but extremely funny, and ends extremely black, i think it was this contrast that moved me so much at the end.

Hm. Strange combination. I must admit I never read Crime and Punishment - is it also as cynical as Catch-22?

You know, after being in army, I must say that all in Catch-22 is true. You just have to understand that this is the way it is, and only then you can survive your service. You even might enjoy your service if you have read the book and imagine yourself as an observer and comparing your life with the book. The problem is that your are too young and stupid to get the whole picture and cynicism of catch-22 and of the army. And too young to understand the book, probably (Had J. Heller ever served?)

Hello, everyone! This is my first post. I love Catch-22. I think that it is probably one of the best books ever written. I mostly love it because it makes me laugh, and there is a surprise around every corner. What do you all think of it>
 
Ahh, first-time poster. I remember when I made my first post on this here board. It seem like only yesterday. The days....they go by so fast.

I have never read Catch-22. But browsing through here I have seen it mentioned enough in a positive light that I have added it to my TBR list. TBR is "to be read" for you noobs.

Have not read Catch-22 yet. & I have no excuse as to why. heh. Although you should know, if you liked that one Im sure you would enjoy Something Happened which was hilarious & well-written; overall a very enjoyable read.

Sacrilege! It is obvious that you are a part of the vast pro-logging conspiracy that is trying to eradicate the eco-friendly e-readers from our mists. You would like nothing more than to bust into our homes and pry them from our cold hands! I mean, our cold, dead hands! I mean…wait…that isn’t right. You’ll only take away my e-reader over my dead body! Yeah, that’s better.

I personally love my Kindle but they aren’t for everyone. Follow Occlith’s link for a good discussion on it. I just posted my lengthy review of the Kindle to that thread as well.
 
For some reason I just can't get through this book. I've read through to about halfway around 3 times now, have really enjoyed it, but have found myself turning to another book every time. I just think that there's too much going on all the time - it tires my wee brain out.
 
i believe that he said a lot of his book was based on what happened to him, and how everything struck him as so absurd, my favorite part of the book is how circularly milo talks, and he could convince you of almost anything

the sequel to catch 22, closing time, gives you an even further look into this
 
it does take a little while to get into, there is a lot going on, so it can get confusing, but I think if you take the time and sort it out, you will really enjoy it
 
Thanks for the advice. I figure I'm about 1/3 through it, which is my usual interest cut-off. I don't believe I'm confused by it but just don't care about the characters and have found the humor not to my taste. I'll give it another try. At what point would you suggest if a person were not into this book to give it up?
 
I positively adored this book. I was really surprised when one of my friends, whom I usually agree with in most matters, hated it, he said it was disconnected and wasn't even about Yossorian, but I don't really see that. Mostly I just though it was awesome. It was also a really quick read for me.
