When you listen to a new CD,

The first listen i find that there's always a few that stand out the rest tend to get sidelined until a few more plays, depends what kind of album it is.....i find if the music is all simlar....think Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Newton Faulker the album tends to flow from song to song and listening becomes easier, and as a result you tend to like more songs on it!!! As opposed to something like Justin Timberlake, Kylie etc where some songs are evidently stronger than others and they tend to differ more in style.

Does that makes sense???? or am I just waffling???

A few times my least favorite track has become my favorite track by the end of the third of fourth listening to the entire CD.

I can usually get a good idea of whether or not I like an album through the first listen, I usually play them at least 5 times before I reserve judgement though, unless it is just a standout either bad or good.

I almost never like all the songs on an album so I don't buy albums. I think the last album that I owned that I liked most of the songs on it was OMD's self titled album (and I bought it when it came out) I have embraced the "new" phenomenon of selling music by the song wholeheartedly.

whn I listen to new music, I light some scented candles, and drink some brandy, and curl up in a psychedelic-art-deco bean bag chair like a minx, while listening to smooth, smooth, smooth, easy listening half dead lifeless elevator drum machine kenny-g-wanna-be jazz...

but then I listen to the cd a second time, you see, as one who has sniffed the wine and has left to drink it. I have my parrot sing a medly while I sit in my smoking jacket by a fake fire, the parrot sitting on me shoulder.

and that is how sophisticated music lovers listen to new music. If you listen to music any differently you have my condolences and condescention

That's cool hep cat.

how many listens do you give it before you make the decision whether you like it or not?

For me, the magic number is three.

The first listen is almost never what I expect.

The second listen I use to expel any preconceived notions I had about the album.

The third listen I can enjoy the music and make a better determination if I like it or not.

I find it strange that your answer is a constant.
It depends upon how good the material is, as to how much I like it and how soon. I sometimes play the first few tracks and love it straight away. Other albums take longer. Some depend on the mood I was in when I listened to them. Some, it is dictated by what I was doing at the time. I find it very difficult to get 'into' an album if I listen to it in the car and now only ever play compilations whilst driving.

MOD EDIT. ARGUMENTATIVE.

I am not sure either. I guess that I usually know what I like and most of the groups that I listen to, they usually have a great CD overall so I like all the songs.

But what happens when you buy something new from an artist you never heard before or only know 1 or 2 songs?

That's easy; there are no good new bands. The tried and trusted ones are still easily the only ones worth investing your hard earned cash in.
Since the Ridiculous Bowel and his aweful trash TV, the established groups have gained a new prestige.
Carry O-kee is fine for moron's, but real music lovers know their onions.
You cannot beat good musicians and singers who sing to bands rather than taped dross.
