Any other Carl Hiaasen fans?

As someone who usually cannot abide Crime fiction..(I really dont care WHODUNNIT),Im very much a fan of Hiaasens books.Except Ive never met anybody else who has read any of his stuff....
so any fans of the environmentally friendly humour of south florida out there?
BTW.....i think lucky you and double whammy to be his best works.

I read Sick Puppy and it was hilarious. So I've got his omnibus on my to read pile, which Has Double Whammy, Tourist Season and Skin Tight in it. Only it's a thick beasty so it'll be a bit heavy in my bag combined with all the other crap I carry in to work with me. I'm saving it for when I'm off work and I'll probably get through it quite quickly.

Ive got that omnibus too.Its got a pic of a back end of a pink cadillacc i think.
All 3 books are top quality. But youre right its a heavy beastie.
have fun with it

I've never read his books, but I bought Hoot recently. However, I've got quite a few books I'll be reading first! :)

Skinny Dip

I just recently finished Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen, and I thought it was excellent. Not exactly up there with Shakespeare and Dickens, but it was a fun read, and that's always nice to find. Very enjoyable. Your thoughts?

Always on the lookout for new authors a friend recommended 'Carl Hiaasen' has anyone read his books and what did you think?.

Carl Hiaason is quite funny! I have a few books he's written including "Lucky You", "Native Tongue", "Stormy Weather" and "Strip Tease" (yes, the movie that Demi Moore played the stripper in!). His characters are extreme in an unusual, funny way. They're almost all batshit insane in one way or another!

Try him out and let me know what you think.

Lucky You, was lots of fun. How can you not love a guy that drilled holes in his hands and feet to make a living?

I just merged a few old threads together and thought I'd drag up this topic since I just finished two of Hiaasen's books.

Skinny Dip, my first Hiaasen novel, was sent to me as a Christmas gift by a fellow reader who had enjoyed it herself. She sent it hoping I would like it and not realizing that it was exactly the type of book I enjoy these days. It tells the story of a woman whose husband pushes her off a cruise ship on their anniversary. She survives by clinging to a bale of weed she comes across until she is rescued by a retired policeman living alone on an island. Rather than turning in the murderous husband the duo decides to exact their own revenge.

Nature Girl is Hiaasen's latest work, which I picked up after enjoying Skinny Dip. Nature Girl features a slightly insane woman bent on getting even with a telemarketer who calls her names over the phone. Rather than letting it go, she secretly hunts him down and manipulates him into flying to Florida with his girfriend for a free vacation and eco-tour. Meanwhile she's being stalked, the telemarketer is being followed by a PI and there is a Seminole Indian trying unsucessfully to be alone on an island full of people.

I'd suggest either of these books (although Skinny Dip was better) to anyone who enjoys a funny novel with an underlying theme of environmentalism. A few of my favorite authors are Christopher Buckley and Christopher Moore, but I think Carl Hiaasen might be better than both of them! I've got a couple more of his books with Gift Cards from Christmas, but I'm going to take a break before reading a third.

thanks for the review on Nature Girl...I've picked it up a few times at the bookstore, only to put it back down. I think I will wait till the paperback comes out....or get it at the library...whichever comes up first!
I do have Hoot and Sick Puppy somewhere around here, will have to try and dig them out.

He's one of my favorite authors right now. I read Double Whammy a few years ago, and liked it, but I wasn't as big into reading as I am now, so I never bothered to check out his other books. This past summer I was looking for a light, summer read, and remembered Double Whammy being pretty fun, so I picked up Skinny Dip, and quite liked it. I read Stormy Weather shortly after that, and for Christmas this year I got Double Whammy (rereading it right now), Basket Case, Tourist Season, and Skin Tight.

Yup, Hiaasen is a funny guy. Last time I checked, he and Dave Barry were both Miami Herald staffers for whatever that's worth. I guess it means a high hilarity ratio. Even though I do prefer Carl Hiaasen's novels above Dave Barry's essays generally, I fairly wept on reading Barry's book about his poll of horrible songs - mind, he was able to squeeze an entire book out of this one little request for people's most hated songs. Apparently women are very sensitive to guys with puffed up self-images that shine clearly through their lyrics.:)

So you can plainly see, Carl Hiaasen is great.:D

No problem. I honestly wouldn't have bought it in HC either, but I got such a great deal on it. It was cheaper than the trade will be. I wanted to post a longer review, but just as I started writing that post all hell broke loose here.

There was something about Nature Girl that I didn't like as much as Skinny Dip, and I can't quite put my finger on it. I think that it may be that there were too many first person perspectives. I enjoy books written from different points of view, but this one just felt a tad to disjointed. I think it would have been better if Hiaasen had stuck to a few points of view rather than jamming a dozen or so in there. It was hard to really get an angle on any specific character because of it.

Just finished Nature Girl. I've now read all of Hiaasen's fiction, and will have to patiently wait for more.

After reading all of them, I think my favorite is still Lucky You. It may be because it was the first Hiaasen I read, but it just seemed to have the best story, the best characters, and the most humor.

But anything he writes is solid in all of those areas.
