Orson Scott Card: Ender's Game

Rogue

I just finished Ender's Game and it was a real pleasure to read it! :D

The only thing I didn't like was the last chapter and all this stuff with "Speaker of the Dead". The book should have ended with the 14th chapter.
Apart from that I loved the end. It really surprised and shocked me! When I noticed that the story was running out of pages I thought that maybe there won't be a real battle with the buggers at all. But it turned out gorgeous!!!
Did you like it?

What did you think of Valentine? In my opinion she was a bit too easily persuaded to help Peter. ??

Your review is great, Gizmo!

The ending was in fact a surprise - I had thought it would continue onto the next book (because I knew before I read it that it was Book 1 of 4). I liked the book, but not so much that I'll continue with the series.

Personally Valentine frightened me. She's too submissive, and I kept expecting her to commit suicide or something. Also that scene in Gladiator where Joaquin Phoenix almost seduces his sister kept coming to mind.

I liked enders game too, though for some reason i never read the other books in the series. Enders shadow is kinda interesting though as it tells the same story through the eyes of another character.

Thx. It took me ages to write it. :D

Submissive is just the word thats describes Valentine best. The Gladiator Scene fits pretty good. I didn't get why she helped Peter. She was intelligent too and Peter was a disgusting little monster. How could she?
By the way Peter's character changed a lot after they started the thing on the nets. He threatens his siblings to kill them, tortures animals and then saves the world?? That doesn't fit at all.
Sometimes I wondered why their parents didn't notice anything that was going on. How could they miss that little psychopath? Ok, these kids are highly intelligent, but the parents knew that and didn't get the big picture.
The other cadets in the Battle School seemed pretty dumb in comparison to Ender, sometimes too dumb.

If you enjoyed Enders Game I would recommend reading the Shadow series. The first book (Ender's Shadow) tells the story of Enders Game through Bean's eyes - this might sound boring but it is really well done and even though you know how the story ends it is still quite gripping.

The second and third books in this series, Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets, deal much more with Peter and Valentine and explain some of the questions raised in Gizmo's last spoiler. I wouldn't say these books are as good as Ender's Game or Ender's Shadow but if you are intersted in knowing 'what happens next' then they are worth a read.

You read the extended version that filled in holes for the sequel. The first release did not have the speaker of the dead part.

Gizmo,

I agree about Ender being too smart - I wished there was someone there who was intellectually as smart to provide some fodder... then it's be more interesting how Ender floats to the top of the pile.

I don't even remember what the parents were there for! :D

Re: Peter - he's clever and ruthless, he probably figured he couldn't rule the world torturing animals. :)

I'm a very big fan of Speaker for the Dead and would recommend going along with Ender for one more book. The themes are quite different and mature, with a strong conceptual aspect to the way time is handled and with a truly "alien" race depicted. As most of Card's work, the question of whether a religious person should stand apart from the world and not become contaminated or whether he needs to get dirty in order to make a difference is very well done. I almost prefer it over EG. It could very easily stand alone.

Since this book was the one nominated for December discussion and there is already an ongoing thread, I thought we could all just use this thread to discuss the book :D

Does the following collection of books complete the series?

1 : Ender's Game (1985)
2 : Speaker for the Dead (1986)
3 : Xenocide (1991)
4 : Children of the Mind (1996)
5 : Ender's Shadow (1999)
6 : Shadow of the Hegemon (2000)
7 : Shadow Puppets (2002)

I am currently reading Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Once I am finished with those books, I want to start the Ender Wiggin Saga (series).

Technically, those are two series. The Shadow books (5-7) take off from Enders Game and occur during the time frame of perhaps #1-2. It would be interesting to hear your perspective on reading them in this sequence: 1, 5, 6, 7, 2, 3, 4.

I read through Xenocide and quit. I think Enders Game is good enough to be a stand alone classic, but I wasn't impressed with the rest.

Probably the greatest Sci-Fi book I have read...EVER. Never really got into the other books but read this one like 3 times and always enjoyed reading it. I know Dune is also considered a classic, but I haven't got into that either.

I just really enjoyed the way the story was written, especially the futuristic war stuff. Really enjoyed it.

The latest book in the series, Shadow of the Giant, has just been released. I think this is the last of the Bean-centric books.

If you like futuristic war, I recommend The Forever War, by Joe Haldeman.

I just joined today, so I went looking through old threads for my favorite Sci-Fi book. I was going to be really, really surprised if Ender's Game didn't have a thread.

One of my favourite series.I have read these books lots of times.I remember when i read the original short story, since than I am fan.
I heard that there will be a movie and screenwriter is Orson Scott Card.

This was probably the best Sci-Fi book I've read. I've been meaning to get into the Alvin Maker series but have not heard much about it. Has anyone read that series? And if so, do you recommend it?
