    Excellent articles as of late

It is quite exceptional. A friend of mine brought up a counter point asserting that there are multiple intelligences and that sports is a great outlet for the bodily-kinesthetic minded. The number of professional athletes is a speck, professions wise. But if you throw in the legions of...

    Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

What a good a timely discussion! I blew the dust off my old copy that I read when we had the BOTM Lolita discussion. I completely forgot the entire Annabel episode, which invites the practice of sloppy psychiatry. The tug is strong in light of: When I try to analyze my own cravings, motives...

    Underlining: Addition or Subtraction

I agree to a point and you have perhaps inspired me to use a ruler when underlining, but I'm not that...well..er...uh...detailed. I would consider using more than one color if you have two different, but neat things that you want to have stand out. I'm a fan of yellow, but I'm also partial to...

    I hate books-salon.com

And that is what is so great about a physical collection. There are stories and memories behind some of those books, things that are significant and which cannot be replicated by an e-reader.

Novel with a black man as main character (in 3rd person), written by a white male

I for one, can testify that JohnB succeeded in his endeavor. I would read it before embarking on such task.

    Current Non-Fiction reads

Just finished Roosevelt and Pearl Harbor by Leonard Baker. Each chapter is dedicated to a month of 1941 and documents the march to war and how Roosevelt managed a balancing act between helping England and pacifying the pacifists at home who wanted to lied down stupidly in front of aggression...

Should you write what you love, or what you think the world wants?

Is it possible to write about what is not in your heart or what moves you and write a good book?

The Syria Issue: Your Personal Stance Is Much Appreciated

If the Syrian artillery pieces are bombed, do any children get chemical shells lobbed at them? If there are no Syrian artillery officers due to them being killed or running from incoming shells and bombs, do the children suffocate due to sarin gas? Then, we have a solution. Then again perhaps...

    Recently Finished

Steinbeck was not about gratuitous violence and "darkness" in and of itself. He had a larger statement about mankind and the values that we hold as important. Crime & Punishment featured a murder, was Dostoyevsky glorifying crime? Was Les Miserable about how children should suffer? Quite...

    Recently Finished

An excellent review, thanks for posting. Steinbeck's strength is what good literature should be. That being, holding a reflective mirror to society and to remind people of their flaws and that we can be better. It's a critical lens and is one that we don't get from politicians. In this...

35 books people should read at least once

Quite an impressive list. Not sure if I would have chosen a number of those books, but then again, it's a list of books to at least read once, not necessarily believe are the best things created in their respective times...

e-reader glitches that tick you off

New gripe-I've discovered that with some ebooks, a quoted portion to begin the chapter, presents as two letters in a descending line going on for a few clicks, depending upon the length of the quote. It would be like: we ha ve no th in gt of ea rb ut fe ar it se lf. Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!
