I never thought of Foucault's Pendulum as sci-fi, but I guess it is, as you say, sci-fi-ish. :) I have The Island of the Day Before on my shelf and will bump it up on my TBR pile.
Reading back on this thread, I realize I still haven't gotten to any Eddings yet.
Well, I think it goes beyond rather arrogant. Arrogance in writers and celebrities is not new or unexpected. Just do a quick internet search: The terms homophobe and racist tend to crop up.
I think once you learn something significant about an author (e.g. radical religious or political views), it's difficult to put it completely aside while reading their work. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Depending on the type of book, it helps better inform your understanding of the...
For example, I just read the following in a thread from ICE:
and would have replied, but I need to contact the admin there and get permission to join in order to post . . . So, I didn't -- reply or join.
Ronny, I don't know how it works in the US but here, in Canada, Kobo is affiliated with the bookstore Chapters-Indigo. At one point Kobo was owned by Indigo but they've since sold it.
I agree, Ronny. It seems odd to have ICE posts show up under recent and new posts on BAR, but when you get to the thread, you're met with a "You have insufficient privileges to reply here" message. Why bother showing the posts to BAR members at all?
I was also wondering if having two...
Yep. It was a fun, park your brain at the door, over-the-top, Transformers' generation action flick. I wouldn't have gone to see it except for the exhortations of my sons (Transformers' generation, natch) saying it's the most fun movie of the year.
I'm about 75% through the Return of Sherlock Holmes on the free edition of my ereader, but it doesn't show pictures or diagrams. (When a pic is supposed to appear, it only says "GRAPHIC" - not very useful.) I'm going to have to get hold of a library hard copy OR ds could lend me one of his...
When I first saw ICE at the top of the page, I thought it meant the I.C.E. we're all supposed to have on our mobile phones -- as in "In Case of Emergency" -- i.e. to click on if there are problems with the site. Silly me.
You all will laugh, but I have a first gen Kobo wireless (now discontinued). I still love it even though it's very slow loading (takes 8 - 10 secs to open a large book like Game of Thrones), only shows the most rudimentary of graphics, has a clunky button for page turning (yep, no swipe...
I've missed you guys too. All's well. All progeny have left the nest. Don't feel old, but I must be right?
I must say, the new look BAR isn't the most intuitive for finding things. And it's a little disconcerting looking down at "Similar Threads" to see threads and avatars I recognize...
Well, hello! I'm amazed that this thread is still around and active.
I haven't been participating in any forums lately and thought I'd stop by to see what's going on here. Lots of unfamiliar names, but still a core of old members. I miss some of those old discussions (but not so much the...
Bob, if you became a member of a library (say, from your hometown in the states), you could download from their collection from anywhere in the world online. You'd just need a library card number and password.
Most major public libraries have ebooks for borrowing now. You need to be a member of the library in order to borrow. You also need to check what format (ePub, pdf, etc.) the books are in to see whether they are compatible with your device.
The books are not only those in the public domain...
