I would guess that a certain amount of time must pass as well as other criteria for a book to be considered a classic. What that period of time is, I do not know.

anyone interested in WWII and computers looking for a doorstop size book should give Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon a shot. Very interesting book about Code breaking and the birth of computers. Just about finished it. Word of warning: it is 900+ dense pages.

My favorite "classics" are also 2 of my favorite all time books. (I love to make top 5 top, 10 lists)
Once I read The Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird in whatever grade you have to read them, I was hooked. I have bought so many copies of these as gifts, replacements for never returned...
All for Charity
I bought the 2 textbooks for my niece. I love the regular books but these 2 were just background for the story. I skimmed them. On the plus side, all of the proceeds that Rowling makes on these books goes to a charity. I am sure a quick google would give you the name of the...
You get shipwrecked on a desert Island. You can only have ONE book. which book do you take? I know this does not have to be your favorite book but give it a shot.
For me, I would take The Lord of the Rings. For one, it is quite a long book, second, I have re-read it alot and always gotten...
Currently I am slowly reading The Poisonwood Bible. I am enjoying it. Quite a suprise for me. I have stayed away from Books from the Oprah Book club as I thought the books were not going to be something that I would enjoy. This is my first look at one of these books. So far so good.

The 12 volumes are just putting together the notes that his father left. It concerns the war of the ring described in the beginning of Fellowship (The movie) There are also a ton of stories relating to old ages, characters and cultures. Tolkein truly world built to the point of inventing a...
LOTR
If you really like LOTR when you read it, you may want to consider picking up The Silmarillion. It is the Tolkeins history of Middle Earth. Talks about all of the tales, and ages past. He considered it his greatest work.

Harry Potter is a great quick read. I have read all four and am (not so) patiently awaiting the fifth. Read the books, they tell a good story and they will cleanse the palatte for heavier reading. Right now I have started The 2nd Half of the Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. The...
The Hobbit
Hobbit/Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite subjects. I read the Hobbit quite a few times before I graduated to the Trilogy. Cannot recommend this book enough.

Just something to start us all out. What is everyone reading these days? I am reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman. So far it is very good. Next, I will be reading Silent Prey by John Sanford.
