    Question about Book Signings

I've been to quite a few signings and I've never known an author refuse to sign an older book - and even, on occasion, books by other people. (Albeit with some connection: Zadie Smith for example was happy to sign a copy of Through the Looking Glass to which she'd written an introduction.) It...

Are you turned off by authors who put out a book a year?

Thanks for the recommendation, Halo. The one I have occasionally considered getting is The Truth, as I believe it's based around a newspaper. I thought media satire might be quite a rich vein for Pratchett to tap. I've often thought that Springfield should have its own newspaper too; just...

Are you turned off by authors who put out a book a year?

Pratchett, of course, has actually slowed down in recent years - he used to put out a new novel every May and every November. He said this came of his belief, at the time, that any time spend not writing was time wasted. Presumably he has relaxed a bit now. Oddly I think in his case it was...

I agree with you Kenny. And it's a while since I've said that. I should add that I don't think I've seen any behaviour of the type you mention here on B&R.

I reserve (and exercise) the right to look down on books that I think aren't good. But the only person who has a right to be insulted or defensive then is the author. And if we're not allowed to criticise books we don't like, it's not much of a discussion forum.

I don't know about Akunin, but Conan Doyle writes beautifully and much of his stuff, from Holmes to The Lost World, is strongly character-driven, so in steffee's terms, that makes you an elitist. Welcome!

Are you turned off by authors who put out a book a year?

Yes, I worked that out - he published eight different books in his own or joint names between July 2005 and July 2006. I do share SNAPPY's instinctive distrust of the churners. But ultimately the proof has to be in the reading. Updike and Roth and prolific but widely acclaimed too.

Interestingly (although perhaps not that interestingly), I only really started reading when I was 17, in the summer of 1990. Again, just to counter the statistics, neither of my parents reads. A lot of kids would also report that the reason they don't like school is because lessons are...

    Goodkind Quotes

Zolipara, this is brilliant stuff! Is this representative, or have you chosen the worst of the worst? I've only vaguely heard of Goodkind before, but now I am a committed fan! Well, if I'm a fan of his I should be committed... Could he be the worst writer in the world??

    A couple of poems...

Bookworm Beauty, you should be careful about putting your full name and age out in public on internet forums. If it's too late to edit your post, you can ask one of the moderators (Ice, Halo, mehastings or Wabbit) to do it for you.

    Your Name, Gender & Age...

So that's the title of book number 7! Well, it'll certainly sell... Anyway back to the topic in hand. I can't believe the oldest declared age here is 39. Come on middle-agers, reclaim the thread and state your dates! I'm 33. (Ds, I too was amazed to see that muggle is male. Not sure why...)

    Bible poll: fiction or nonfiction?

I think it's OK rules-wise as long as you're discussing it in the context of the Bible, abc. Can I ask, in relation to that, whether you believe that the creation story in Genesis is fact, ie literally happened? (I ask without prejudice, merely for information on where you're coming from.)

I hate to harp on this, Moto, but Stewart's right, when you say that suggests that someone has directly called others "childish" - that very word - for reading and enjoying the Harry Potter books. That has not happened, at least on this forum (there are 143 posts with the word childish in...

No Moto that's irrelevant, your allegation of 'low intelligence' and 'no taste' came before Stewart said that. You need to find something from before that on this thread that backs up what you said (and also about me accusing someone or other here of reading "crap"). I'm not splitting hairs...

Sorry, I don't follow, muggle. Can you elaborate on the relevance of that? Do you mean in relation to Motokid accusing people of saying things they didn't say?

    Greatest Living British Author

Sorry Moto, I was unclear. What I meant was that I had begun it three times before now, but never got very far. (Having said that, there are books that I have taken three or four reads to really feel I'm getting the most out of them, such as Jeanette Winterson's Art & Lies, or Martin Amis's...

Motokid I'm not ignoring you - or by silence agreeing with you!! - but these points have been gone over ad nauseam in the Mainstream Blockbuster thread you linked to earlier. In brief however: What's serving society got to do with it? It's not the writer's fault if a great book isn't widely...
